Indigo - Way to Go

As an example of achievements of an Indigo, I thought I'd outline one of mine.

X3 is a space based computer game, built as a trading/fighting/thinking simulator, where the game is so open ended, some people have been playing it non-stop for years.

In the process of helping people with the game, I wrote about a dozen different guides on how to do things, and different ways of playing the game, compiled an X3 Handbook from all the available guides, that is downloaded about 800 times a month still, and did a series of game Mods and extra scripts to improve the games playability.

This also includes a guide on how to play the game as a pacifist !

I've also done mods for Sins of a Solar Empire but not released them, and have been modding some of the older games as well.

Game playing on the computer has been a pretty important outlet for me as an INdigo, and I recommend it as a 'release mechanism' for the anger and frustration an Indigo is often having difficulty getting rid of.

Never picked up X3, but I played the heck outta X2! I also couldn't seem to get enough Galactic Civ II, spent hours upon hours just designing ships.

I'm currently working on building a gaming site for mature gamers to submit their own reviews and opinions about all things gaming. Figure it would be a nice change to have a friendly place for folks to discuss our favorite virtual escapes without the annoyances of preteens with vocabularies consisting primarily of four letter words.

Once they got the bugs out of X3, it was a significant leap up from X2. And there were far more scripts and mods written for it as well. Not to mention guides. It also had a giant mod made for it that really extended it.

X3 Terren Conflict has just been released now, another leap forward. I'm about to start grappelling with updating all my mods and scripts to that, which will keep me busy for a while.

Either are well worth getting, just make sure you download the patches before beginning to play.

Most games now come with the ability to be modified. A lot of the way the game works is not done by the program, but by a series of changable scripts, which is like a computer program, but not in an .exe format, prcessed like an old batch file, one command at a time.

A Mod is a collection of changes to the game, which can include changing the data specifications and changes to scripts or new scripts.

Its become a quite big thing.

As soon as a new space based game comes out, people do Mods to put all the star wars, star trek and every other scifi space ship into the game.

A good mod can completely change the nature of the game, and most good ones make the game even better, and so be played for much longer.

A lot of Modders are Indigos, as this is an expression of their indigo creativity, and the games are outlets for their anger and frustration.

High end PC games.

"Real" computer games for "men" ! Mr. Green

X3 TC, the latest version of the X games is really high end to play it properly. Needs a high end fast processor, lots of memory, huge amount of disc space, the absolute latest in graphics etc. etc.

My poor old computer is barely running it. Embarassed

Luckily, those of us that lack a significant other have the funds to run a top-end gaming rig!

Did you ever play Freelancer much Timothy? That one got its hooks into me badly, the environments were simply gorgeous and the fast pace really boosted the fun.

I got really annoyed at Freelancer because of its lack of a joystick.

I got up to the race mission, and simply could not get through it. As the mouse worked the direct opposite of the joystick, I would always move the mouse the wrong way at a critical point and miss a ring. Shocked

I also found the mouse had no real fine control at all, and you always had to reposition your hand on the desk at the crucial moment and lost a second before your turn came into effect. It wasnt worth the aggro !

Consequently I threw the game away.

Indigo comment : No-one in their right mind designs a space based first person in the cockpit game WITHOUT a joystick interface ! But then, Microsoft programmers are insane anyway, so what does one expect ? Sad

I think not too long after that X2 came out, and I never gave Freelancer another thought.

I've now moved on to X3 Terran Conflict, which is the last installment in the X series.

The graphics are huger, the universe bigger, the number of things to do is mucher, the number of ship types yonkser, and overall, its pretty wild. Mr. Green

I've started to do a mod for it already and getting some old scripts converted.

One thing I hate is the "start from scratch" mentality. And I dislike the "balanced mentality".

So my mod is about unbalancing key things like giving the player better sheilding and gun choice, more speed, and of course, access to the ships you had at the end of the previous game.

I completely agree with the space game/joystick debacle...but once I realized that the game was closer to shooter controls things became much more tolerable.

One of these days I'll snag X3, though I wish Lucasarts would finally get around to putting out a new X-Wing vs TIE Fighter. Nothing beats leading a veritable swarm of TIE Fighters against a MonCal, or vice versa for that matter!

I was pretty bad at that game. I dont think I got any of them completed. I just found working out the tactics needed to do each mission too hard.

What I love about X3 is that there is no right or wrong way to do anything, and the missions are completely irrelevant if you prefer. Lots of people dont ever play the missions ! Its all about making your own game goals.
